Day 1 Bagan Embarkation Cruise

Board Belmond Orcaella at Bagan and enjoy a delicious lunch.

Later, disembark for a guided tour of the ancient city of Bagan. Around 2,000 temples dot the plains besides the Ayeyarwady River, with many dating back 800 years or more. Visit two of the most significant pagodas, Sulamani and Ananda, before stopping by at an authentic local lacquerware workshop.

As the daylight begins to fade, watch the sunset across the plain and take part in an exclusive candle lighting ceremony. Return to the ship for dinner.

 

Day 2 Discover Bagan Cruise

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast. This morning also provides the opportunity to take to the skies in a hot air balloon (additional supplement applies).

Take your pick of three fascinating excursions. Take a tour of Old Bagan by horse and cart, explore the monuments by bicycle, or take an in-depth look at Taun Be village and visit Belmond’s free clinic.

In the afternoon, set sail towards Salay where you can visit the teak monastery Yout-Saun-Kyaung. Relax back on board, perhaps sitting in on an illuminating talk about the ways of life in Myanmar. A classic puppet show provides this evening’s entertainment.

 

Day 3 Seeing town of Magwe & Min Hla Cruise

Visit the port town of Magwe and its famous Myathalon Pagoda. Devotees come from miles around to join in religious festivals. Learn about Myanmar astrology and the significance of spirit animals, an important part of local belief.

Return to the ship for a monk blessing ceremony, before continuing with your sail.

Disembark for a late-afternoon excursion to Gwechaung, an important hilltop stronghold built in 1860 to keep the British at bay. Journey by ox cart across the farmlands for a real taste of rural life.

Tonight’s dinner will be a feast of grilled specialities, served under the stars or on a nearby sandbank (weather permitting).

 

Day 4 Learn about ancient city Sri Ksetra Cruise

Take the opportunity to relax this morning. Perhaps enjoy yoga on deck, sit in on a talk about Myanmar’s past and future, or indulge with a spa treatment.

In the afternoon visit the historic train station in Pyay. Continue to the ancient city Sri Ksetra (‘Fabulous City’) with its unique cylindrical shaped stone stupas. Dating back to the 5th – 9th centuries, this city flourished during the rule of the Phyu. During the 1890s Pyay was a booming trade town, and there is still much activity in and around the docks. Next, enjoy a city tour, visit the impressive Shwe-san-daw Pagoda and the imposing 10-storey Sitting Buddha watching over this important site.

Near the ship, a night market sparks to life as the sun sets. Our guides are happy to show you around the food stalls and let you soak up the ambience.

After dinner, a movie will be shown in the Lounge. Fresh popcorn and homemade ice cream make it a night to remember.

 

Day 5 Excursion to Shwe Taung town Cruise

Continue your cruise, alighting to visit a rarely-seen riverside village where lifestyles have remained unchanged for centuries.

Spend the day relaxing on board. Learn how to tie a longyi and how to prepare thanaka, a paste that serves as both makeup and sun protection. Wear your longyi to a special cocktail reception before dinner this evening.

 

Day 6 Visit Pyi Taw Pyan Pagoda & Danuphyu Town Cruise

Disembark at the small port town of Zalon, famed for its bamboo weaving. Travel through town like a local aboard a Chinese buffalo truck.

Continue to another little-visited town called Danuphyu. This is where the revered General Maha Bandula led a Burmese defensive against the British troops during the Anglo-Burmese War. Visit the memorial, and sample sweet tea and snacks at a local teashop.

 

Day 7 Yangon Cruise

Spend the morning relaxing on deck as you make your way to Yangon. Listen in on a talk from our onboard doctor about healthcare in Myanmar and Belmond’s local contributions.

Arrive in Yangon after lunch. Take a tour of the city, including Pansodan Road, Chinatown and the bustling Bogyoke ‘Scott’ Market.

Return to the ship for a sensational cocktail party and farewell feast.

 

Day 8 Disembarkation Cruise

Disembark in the late morning for your onward travel arrangements.

Day 1 Embark in Yangon Cruise

Board Belmond Orcaella at its mooring in Yangon and enjoy a relaxing breakfast as we start our journey to Bagan.

After lunch, enjoy an introductory lecture about the heritage buildings we are sailing past along the Ayeyarwady River.

A welcome cocktail party and introduction to the ship’s officers precedes dinner.

 

Day 2 Visit Danuphyu Town Cruise

This morning visit Danuphyu, a historically important town during the Anglo-Burmese War. See the General Maha Bandula memorial at Pali University, followed by a trip to a cheroot maker and local tea shop. You’ll also have a chance to wander the bustling market.

Return to the ship for afternoon tea. Join our guides in the Lounge for an introduction to the Myanmar language.

Enjoy dinner as Belmond Orcaella moors at Italoke.

 

Day 3 Relaxing on board while cruising to ancient Myanmar capital of Pyay Cruise

Spend the day relaxing on board as we make our way towards the ancient Myanmar capital of Pyay. Take part in sunrise yoga, indulge with a spa treatment, or unwind beside the outdoor pool.

An astrologer will join you on board for number and palm readings. Astrology is an important aspect of Myanmar culture.

Sit in on a fascinating talk about local Buddhism, and join a longyi tying and thanaka paste making demonstration. Wear your longyi at this evening’s pre-dinner cocktail party.

 

Day 4 Sight seeing at Shwesadaw Pagoda Cruise

Arrive in Pyay in the morning and disembark for a visit to the impressive Shwesandaw Pagoda, boasting views across the city. You’ll also get to see the ten-storey Buddha and make an offering to your personal planetary post, learning about the significance of spirit animals.

You’ll also visit the ‘Fabulous City’ of Sri Ksetra. One of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Myanmar, Sri Ksetra is famed for its unique, cylindrical stone stupas.

Return to Belmond Orcaella and spend the rest of the afternoon sailing through the stunning scenery. A talk on Myanmar’s past, present and future will be presented by one of our guides.

After dinner, enjoy a movie in the Lounge & Bar, complete with fresh popcorn and homemade ice cream.

 

Day 5 Explore the quaint Gwechaung village Cruise

Relax with a full morning of sailing. On deck there is an option to make your own kite from bamboo and recycled materials, flying it from the stern.

In the late afternoon, disembark to visit the hilltop fort at Gwechaung. Travel through the countryside by ox cart for first-hand experience of the rural lifestyle along the Ayeyarwady River.

Savour a stunning dinner of grilled specialities, served under the stars on the Observation Deck or on a nearby sandbank (weather permitting).

 

Day 6 Magwe Cruise

This morning we arrive at the trade port of Magwe. Enjoy a tuk tuk tour of the busy market and see the famous Myathalon Pagoda. Visit a monastic school, and join our onboard doctor as he donates stationery to the schoolchildren.

Return to the ship for lunch. Later there is an invitation to take part in a Lahpet Thoke, or tea leaf salad, competition. Work in teams to make one of the most popular dishes in Myanmar cuisine, with a winner chosen by the ship’s Captain.

 

Day 7 Bagan Cruise

This morning disembark for Salay to view the exquisite 19th-century teak monastery Yout-Saun-Kyaung.

Lunch is served as we cruise into Bagan. Disembark for an early evening tour of Taung Be village, travelling by traditional horse and cart, including an exclusive candle lighting ceremony.

This evening’s entertainment is an enchanting puppet show.

 

Day 8 Bagan Cruise

This morning you have the option to enjoy one of Bagan’s most magical experiences as you take a hot air balloon ride above the temples (additional supplement applies).

Today you have a choice of three excursions. Visit family-owned businesses that specialises in making typical Myanmar delicacies and goods. Continue your tour through a temple complex in Old Bagan, and enjoy a private tour of a rarely-seen temple by torchlight. More active explorers can find their way through the monuments by mountain bike, using our map. Alternatively, stroll through Taung Be village and visit Belmond’s inspiring free clinic.

Return to the ship for lunch, then visit two of the most significant pagodas in Bagan; Sulamani and Ananda.

Enjoy your final evening aboard, including a fantastic farewell cocktail party, dinner and elephant dance.

 

Day 9 Disembarkation Cruise

Day 1 Mandalay Embarkation

Board Belmond Orcaella and cruise on the Ayeyarwady River towards northern Myanmar.

A stop at Mingun includes a visit to the world's largest brick-built pagoda and the biggest uncracked bell.

This evening you’ll get to know fellow travellers at the welcome cocktail and dinner party.

 

Day 2 Nwe Nyein

Disembark at Nwe Nyein for a guided walking tour and a chance to meet artisans sculpting traditional clay pots.

Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar. Lecture “Myanmar ways of life” by your guide at the Lounge Bar.

Dinner is served in the Restaurant.

Release of Shan Balloons at the Observation Deck (weather permitting).

 

Day 3 Kyan Hnyat

Spend the morning strolling around the delightful village of Kyan Hnyat. Children greet you on their way to school and the market begins bustle with activity.

As Belmond Orcaella continues its voyage, you can admire the rural villages dotted along the shore.

 

Day 4 Visit Katha

Visit Katha by trishaw and take in the market made famous by George Orwell in Burmese Days.

Return on board and set sail. Lunch buffet is served in the Restaurant.

Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar where you can also enjoy a lecture.

This evening dinner is served in the Restaurant, followed by entertainment from Shan Dancers on the Observation Deck.

 

Day 5 Shwe Paw Kyun

Arrival at Shwe Paw Kyun. Transfer by boat to the pretty Shwe Paw Island and walk among the stilt houses of the Kachin fishermen. Visit the island monastery, and perhaps call into the village school.

Return on board and set sail for Bhamo. We will be entering the dramatic, narrow 2nd defile around 10:00 and passing through should take about two hours.

Enjoy the scenery from the Observation Deck.

Buffet lunch is served in the Restaurant.

Transfer to shore by fast boat for a walking tour of the lively town of Bhamo, the major northern trading post between China and Myanmar.

 

Day 6 Weima

Arrive at Weima village and enjoy a visit to an elephant camp.

Continue with a visit to the local school to donate school stationary. Return on board.

Spend the afternoon on board and enjoy afternoon tea in the Lounge.

 

Day 7 Naba

In the early morning, board a train to the forest station of Naba and journey into the thick Kachin jungle and teak forest.

Myanmar traditional dress “longyi” and thanakha (local make up) demonstration on the Observation Deck.

Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge Bar.

Join fellow travellers for a longyi cocktail party.

 

Day 8 Ma Lae Village

Alight at Ma Lae Village for a walking tour of the village and a visit to the monastery. Witness a traditional Noviciation Ceremony, regarded as a very important moment for young Burmese boys.

After dinner enthusiastic young actors from Mandalay’s School of Performing Arts will enact scenes from the Yamayana play on the Observation Deck. This is a Hindu Creation Epic that is widely performed across all of South-East Asia and features characters from Bali, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

 

Day 9 Mandalay

Mandalay comes into view in the early morning.

Disembark for a tour of Myanmar’s second city, including lunch at a local restaurant.

A special dinner will be served on the sandbank this evening.

 

Day 10 Bagan

Spend the day gazing at the passing scenery as the ship continues towards Bagan.

This evening take in the unforgettable sunset over the Bagan plain and enjoy a puppet show by traditional Bagan artists.

 

Day 11 Bagan

Visit the ancient sites in and around Bagan with an expert guide.

In the afternoon you may choose to join a tour of Mount Popa—the legendary home of animist spirits known as Nats—with its impressive summit monastery. Or take a horse-drawn cart or a bicycle to explore on your own.

Celebrate your final evening on board at this evening’s cocktail party, and say goodbye to your new friends during the Farewell Dinner.

 

Day 12 Yangon

Transfer to Bagan airport for your flight to Yangon.
