Exploring Koh Rong Island, Cambodia

With minimal development, untouched jungle and over 20 beaches, Cambodia’s Koh Rong is undoubtedly one of Southeast Asia’s most heavenly island escapes. Situated an hour away from Sihanoukville, Koh Rong is surrounded by untouched coral reefs and schools of tropical fish.

Koh Rong’s accommodation options are on the whole, comfortable yet ‘rustic’, and therefore if you are looking for a spot of luxury, in addition to that all important isolation, the stunning resort covers two small islands with a wooden footbridge connecting them both. Guests either have a choice of a villa with private pool in the lush rainforest, or a villa perched over the turquoise waters. The property harmoniously blends into the tropical surroundings and is built with sustainable materials to preserve the area’s stunning beauty.

Kohrong Island Cambodia Tours

Although some may spend thousands of USD traveling to the Maldives to experience the sight of a phosphorescent sea, it is possible to see the same phenomenon in Cambodia. While the temples of Angkor and the sights of the capital city Phnom Penh are the highest profile attractions of Cambodia, there is much more to this country. One such place is a beautiful island, a forgotten paradise, called Koh Rong, which means dragon.

Koh Rong is located in the Gulf of Thailand, 20 km from the city of Sihanoukville. A peaceful 2 hour boat journey brings you to the smooth white sands fringed by dense green forests, the colours of tropical island wonder.

Quite the opposite of Sihanoukville’s busy beaches, Koh Rong is a quiet and pristine paradise which immediately draws you in. The first impression is of white sand and sunshine. Then you find the island’s rich ecosystem of prime forest and numerous creatures, the sight of which draws experts from abroad.

You can book scuba diving tours to explore the magnificent coral reefs or hire a local fisherman’s boat for a wonderful fishing trip amidst the waves and sky. There is no 5-star restaurants, but the freshness of the fare and the friendliness you encounter conspire to make it a 5-star experience.

If you visit Koh Rong, you should stay overnight on the island, especially on moonlit nights, the perfect time to see the rare and fascinating natural phenomenon of the phosphorescent sea.

Bright light is emitted by a species of phosphorescent plankton when under pressure, which creates the most magical scene as if a galaxy of sparkling stars were hidden under the waves. Time spent on the sand, literally glowing under the moonlight, will provide a whole new level of holiday memories.

After a day exploring the island, enjoy a delicious dinner and relax amidst the peaceful and comfortable life on the island, far from the noise and bustle of the city. Generators provide electricity from 6pm to 10pm, and at night the island is completely quiet, save for the gentle sounds of waves and forest birds.

The cost of traveling to Koh Rong, once in Cambodia tours, is minimal, and the island was voted one of the 45 ‘must see’ tourist destinations in the world by the New York Times. Put this little-known island paradise on your list, white sand and summer wonder are awaiting you. Koh Rong will be an unforgettable destination in your Indochina tours.
