The right North Vietnam route depends on how much time you have and how much road travel you are comfortable with. Compact itineraries work well around Hanoi and nearby destinations, while mountain and deep-north routes need more nights because travel times increase significantly.

3–4 days: keep the route compact

A short Northern Vietnam trip should focus on one or two areas rather than trying to reach the far mountains. Paradise Travel currently publishes examples such as Hanoi with Mai Chau, or Hanoi with Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay.

5–8 days: combine classic highlights

9–12 days: add a mountain region

A longer itinerary can go beyond the classic triangle and include destinations such as Mai Chau, Moc Chau, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Mu Cang Chai or Bac Ha. The extra days are important because these routes include substantial overland travel between mountain regions.

13–16 days: explore Northern Vietnam in depth

Travelers who specifically want Northern Vietnam can use two weeks or more for a deeper route through the Northwest or far north. North Vietnam only or a whole-country trip?

If Northern Vietnam is your main interest, a longer regional itinerary makes sense. If this is your first visit and you also want Hoi An, Central Vietnam or the Mekong Delta, a full Vietnam itinerary may use your travel time more effectively than adding southern destinations to a page intended for Northern Vietnam.

Mountains and trekking

Sapa, Fansipan, Mu Cang Chai and parts of Ha Giang suit travelers who want more walking, mountain scenery and rural experiences. The itinerary should state the approximate walking time and difficulty rather than treating all mountain visits as equivalent.

Rural and slower travel

Mai Chau and selected countryside stays suit travelers who prefer cycling, village walks and more time in one area. This style can reduce transfer fatigue and works well when cultural interaction matters more than covering many destinations.

Scenic road journeys

Ha Giang and the Northwest suit travelers who enjoy mountain roads and changing landscapes as part of the journey itself. These routes require more transfer time than Hanoi, Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay and should be planned with fewer one-night stops.

Families and less-active travelers
