TIPS

  • Pay attention to the weather before traveling. Northern and Central Vietnam have four seasons a year while Laos and Cambodia have only two seasons (dry and rainy seasons).
  • Prepare some cash: There are many ATMs in tourism spots, but in provinces, you will need to pay in cash.
  • Prepare for the humidity: wear appropriate clothes and bring extra water.
  • Don’t forget sun protection items: umbrella, hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. The hot and humid weather in Vietnam will cause sunburn.
  • Dress appropriately when visiting a religious site: Always keep a shawl or some long-sleeved clothing in your bag as you may be refused entry or cause offense if you are not properly covered.

INDOCHINA REGION TRAVEL ADVICE

Important travel tips for traveling to Indochina countries, Thailand and Myanmar

Traveling through Indochina and its neighboring Southeast Asian gems offers one of the most culturally immersive experiences on the planet. The region, made up of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar, is rich in diversity – from ancient temples to jungle-clad mountains and tropical coastlines.

Indochina country map for your Indochina tours

  • Vietnam stretches vertically along the coast, offering a wide range of landscapes: the terraced rice fields of Sapa, the UNESCO-listed Ha Long Bay, the imperial city of Hue and the vibrant urban chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. The Mekong Delta in the south is a tranquil maze of waterways worth exploring.
  • Laos, a landlocked country, offers serene escapes like Luang Prabang, with its saffron-robed monks and French colonial charm. Adventure seekers will love Vang Vieng’s limestone caves and the 4,000 Islands in the south.
  • Cambodia is home to the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat, one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. Beyond Siem Reap, you’ll find Phnom Penh’s historical sites and relaxed coastal towns like Kampot.
  • Thailand balances modernity and tradition beautifully. Bangkok is a buzzing capital with temples and rooftop bars, while Chiang Mai offers spiritual serenity. Don’t miss the islands in the south like Phuket or Koh Lanta for beach bliss.
  • Myanmar, still emerging as a tourist destination, is known for its golden pagodas, particularly the Shwedagon in Yangon and the surreal temple plains of Bagan. The country’s slower pace and deeply spiritual culture make it uniquely rewarding.

Each destination offers distinct experiences, so planning a multi-country itinerary gives you a well-rounded glimpse of Southeast Asia’s heart.

Transportation across Indochina is an adventure in itself. Despite uneven infrastructure, getting around is relatively easy with a bit of planning. Here’s how to navigate effectively:

For long-distance travel, buses and trains are widely used. Vietnam’s Reunification Express connects Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and offers scenic coastal views. Buses connect major cities in Laos and Cambodia, but roads can be bumpy and slow.

In Thailand, the train system is reliable and comfortable, while budget airlines like AirAsia and VietJet offer cheap regional flights, ideal for covering long distances or tight schedules. Flying between countries – e.g., from Bangkok to Yangon or Hanoi to Luang Prabang – is often faster and more convenient than land crossings.

Local transport varies:

  • In cities, use Grab (a rideshare app) where available.
  • Tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are common and affordable but always agree on the fare first.
  • For independent travelers, motorbike rentals are cheap and allow flexibility, but traffic can be chaotic – especially in Vietnam and Myanmar.

Riverboats are still vital in areas like the Mekong Delta or Laos’s Nam Ou River. Slow boats offer scenic routes but require patience.

Border crossings are usually straightforward with e-visas or visa-on-arrival options. However, always check current regulations, especially when crossing into Myanmar, which may have restrictions.

Southeast Asia is incredibly diverse, but there are shared values and customs you should respect to have a more meaningful and smooth trip.

In all five countries, Buddhism is deeply influential. Always dress modestly – cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples. Remove your shoes before entering sacred spaces and homes. Avoid pointing your feet at people or religious objects; feet are considered the lowest part of the body in the region’s etiquette.

Respect for elders and authority is paramount. In Myanmar and Thailand, the head is sacred – never touch someone’s head, even in a friendly gesture. Avoid public displays of affection, especially in Laos and Myanmar, where social conservatism is more pronounced.

When interacting with locals, smile often and remain calm – raising your voice is considered disrespectful. If you make a mistake, apologize sincerely and move on.

In rural areas, English may be limited, so learn basic phrases in each language. A simple “thank you” in the local language goes a long way. Body language and politeness can help bridge the communication gap.

Tipping is not expected in most places but is always appreciated, especially in Vietnam and Thailand. In Cambodia and Laos, rounding up the bill is common.

Avoid sensitive political topics, particularly in Myanmar. Show interest in local customs, ask questions respectfully and you’ll be met with genuine hospitality across the region.

Managing money and staying safe are crucial to having a worry-free adventure through Indochina. While the region is generally safe for tourists, knowing the basics will keep you better prepared.

Most places operate on cash-based economies. While cards are accepted in major cities and hotels, ATMs are essential and available in most urban areas. Keep small denominations for markets and tuk-tuks. Exchange rates vary, so use trusted money changers or banks – avoid airport counters when possible.

Each country has its own currency:

  • Vietnam – Vietnamese Dong (VND)
  • Cambodia – Riel (KHR) (but USD is widely accepted)
  • Laos – Kip (LAK)
  • Thailand – Baht (THB)
  • Myanmar – Kyat (MMK)

Scams are rare but do occur – common ones include rigged taxi meters, overpriced souvenirs, or “too-friendly” locals inviting you into tourist traps. Use licensed taxis or apps like Grab and don’t be afraid to walk away from a deal.

Street food is often safe and delicious – but choose stalls with high turnover and fresh preparation. Drink only bottled or filtered water and carry hand sanitizer, especially when traveling rural.

Travel insurance is a must – covering not just medical needs but also potential flight or baggage issues. Clinics and hospitals in Thailand and Vietnam are good, while Laos and Cambodia may require evacuation to Bangkok for serious cases.

Lastly, keep copies of your passport and visa handy and always register with your embassy if staying long-term or traveling to remote regions.

By staying alert, respectful and prepared, you’ll enjoy everything Indochina has to offer – rich culture, stunning nature and welcoming people.

We Just did the “Most Interesting Destinations” tour and bloody hell, what a ripper! Cruising through limestone karsts on Ha Long Bay was unreal. Loved the mix: vibe of Hanoi’s lake, ancient ruins in Hue, then sunsets in Hoi An. Even the free days in Nha Trang were killer-went kayaking and hit a spa; total recharge. SG nightlife in Ho Chi Minh was the cherry on top. We Can’t wait to tell the mates back home!
