Looking At Tam Quan Sedge Fields

After Bến Tre, Tam Quan of Bình Định is known as the second largest coconut land of Vietnam. Villages here are not only surrounded by lush green coconut forests but it is also the homeland of immense sedge fields. The traditional Tam Quan sedge mat village is renowned throughout the country.

Tam Quan, Tam Quan Bắc and Hoài Châu feature the most sedge fields in Hoài Nhơn district, where has been providing materials for forming the brand name of Tam Quan sedge mats. There are three harvests each year, but the one in March lunar month (or April) is the main one. The average profit for each pole of fresh sedge is about 3 million VND and 10 million VND for dried and chopped sedges. Local people here live on these sedge fields.

When harvesting, they divide sedges into short and long sedges. Sometimes they chop and dry them to get more profits. Then, sedges are dyed, dried and transported to the mat-weaving workshop. Each day, they can make 4 hand-made mats and 10 machine-made mats.

Tam Quan mats are preferred for their soft and beautiful patterns made by skillful artisans. It is fantastic to visit Tam Quan sedge fields this season because you can feel their beauty and the love of local people for this precious gift from God.
