History of Dong Xuan Market
The origin of the market
Before 1889, local merchants used to gather and trade at two smaller open-air markets located near the banks of the To Lich River and Thai Cuc Lake (near Cau Dong and Bach Ma temples).
However, when the French colonial administration filled the river and the lake to clear land, they relocated all the vendors into an empty plot in the Dong Xuan area. Initially, the market was simply an outdoor trading ground with thatched roofs, carrying the vibrant spirit of the old river merchants.
The French architecture and the 1946 battle
In 1890, the French administration officially constructed the massive indoor market, spanning 6,500 square meters. The unique facade featured classic French architecture and heritage with five distinct triangular honeycomb-patterned sections, five arches, and a sturdy tin roof. Beyond being a commercial hub, the market holds immense historical significance.
When the National Resistance broke out in 1946, Dong Xuan Market became a fierce battleground where the Vietnamese National Salvation Army bravely fought against the French Foreign Legion. Today, you can still see the Cam Tu (Death Braves) monument at the northwest corner of the market, honoring those heroes.
The 1994 fire and reconstruction
Around 1990, the market underwent significant renovations, building up to three stories in the middle while preserving the iconic front arches. Unfortunately, on the night of July 14, 1994, a massive fire completely devastated almost all the stalls inside, marking the biggest market fire in Hanoi’s history. It was a heartbreaking moment for the city.
Fortunately, in 1995, the market was rebuilt with a 68-billion VND investment, expanding to 14,000 square meters with modern fire safety systems and over 2,000 stalls, becoming the massive trading hub we see today.

Following the reorganization and merger plan in mid-2025, Dong Xuan Market is officially located in Hoan Kiem Ward (previously Dong Xuan Ward). It is nestled right in the Hanoi Old Quarter, surrounded by Dong Xuan street to the west, Hang Khoai to the north, Cau Dong to the south, and Nguyen Thien Thuat to the east. You can head directly toward the west entrance on Dong Xuan Street to enter.
The market spans three enormous floors, operating primarily as the largest wholesale center in Northern Vietnam:
- The first floor is packed with electronics, shoes, luggage, and sunglasses.
- Head up to the second floor, and you will find an ocean of clothes, silk, and fabrics.
- The third floor is dedicated mostly to baby items and children’s clothing.
- Right behind it lies Bac Qua Market, creating a massive interconnected complex often called the Dong Xuan – Bac Qua market by the locals.

- Standard Indoor Market: The main market opens daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We recommend visiting in the morning to witness the chaotic, authentic energy of wholesale trading. If you visit on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, the market stays open until 10:30 PM for night market.
