General Information

Tam Dao is a mountain town in Vinh Phuc province, about 80 km from Hanoi. Recently recognized as a National Tourist Area, it sits at around 900 m above sea level. The name comes from its three visible peaks—Thach Ban, Thien Thi, and Phu Nghia—often floating above the clouds.

With its mild climate and fresh mountain air, this highland retreat has long been a favorite weekend getaway from Hanoi. Many visitors describe it as experiencing “four seasons in a single day,” making it one of the most unique destinations in northern Vietnam.

Weather by Season

Spring (Mar–May): Flowers bloom across the hillsides. A quieter time for travel with reasonable prices and fewer crowds.
Summer (Jun–Aug): The busiest months. The town is usually 4–5°C cooler than Hanoi, making it a popular escape from the city heat.
Fall (Sep–Nov): The most beautiful season, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures—ideal for trekking and photography. Hotels are often fully booked, so reserve early.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Misty and romantic, perfect for cloud hunting. The best months are November to January, when the town is often covered in fog.

How to Get There

Travel time from Hanoi: about 2 hours. Many travelers plan a 2-day itinerary to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace.

Private car / Limousine: Direct and comfortable. Limousine shuttles cost about 200,000–300,000 VND round trip. Renting a car with driver is a good choice for flexibility.
Motorbike: Popular among backpackers. The last 13 km mountain pass is steep with sharp turns—ride carefully.
Bus/Coach: From My Dinh station to Vinh Yen (~70,000 VND), then continue by taxi (~20 km) to the town center.
Train: Hanoi → Vinh Yen (from 35,000 VND), then taxi or motorbike taxi for the final stretch.

Top Attractions

Town Square: Central fountain and the iconic “Tam Dao” sign, popular for photos.
Stone Church: A Gothic-style church built in 1937, considered the symbol of the town.
Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac): A short hike of about 400 steps to a refreshing waterfall. Best on sunny days.
Telecommunication Tower: A climb of 1,400 steps through orchids and maple trees with sweeping views at the top.
Cau May Cloud Bridge: A favorite spot for photography, especially at sunset or after rain.
Ba Chua Thuong Ngan Temple: A peaceful temple reached via a bamboo-lined path.
Lala Land Complex: Fun for photos, with cactus gardens, rooftop bus café, and fruit picking.
Sky Gate: A panoramic viewpoint over the misty town and surrounding mountains.

Many visitors combine this destination with a northern Vietnam tour for a balanced itinerary.

Food and Local Specialties

The mountain climate shapes its food culture. Highlights include:

Chayote shoots: Stir-fried with garlic or served boiled with sesame salt. Locals also use them in BBQ dishes.
Hill chicken: Lean meat, often grilled or steamed—served in nearly every restaurant.
Mountain pork: Grilled or stir-fried with lemongrass and chili; whole roasted pig for groups.
Ant-bitten beef (Bo Tai Kien Dot): A unique specialty, marinated and grilled with herbs.
Sticky rice with black beans: A hearty dish for cold evenings.
